Gifhorn District Heads to Early Election on Oct 26 to Choose New Landrat or Landrätin

Gifhorn district is set for an early election day on October 26 to choose a new Landrat or Landrätin following the sudden passing of Tobias Heilmann (SPD). Voters aged 16 and above, with German or EU citizenship, residing in the district for at least three months, and not disqualified, are eligible. A runoff may occur on November 9 if no candidate secures an absolute majority.

The election day will be a close race among several candidates. The SPD has nominated Philipp Raulfs, a state parliamentarian, to succeed his party colleague. The CDU is fielding Telse Dirksmeyer-Vielhauer, an agronomist and experienced communal politician. AfD has put forward Stefan Marzischewski, a state parliamentarian and doctor. Notably, Alliance 90/The Greens will not be running a candidate.

In the meantime, Dominik Meyer zu Schlochtern is temporarily leading the administration until a new Landrat or Landrätin is elected. The successful candidate will serve an eight-year term. BWG has nominated Marion Mäding, who was unanimously chosen by its members.

Gifhorn district residents are encouraged to exercise their democratic right on election day. The elected Landrat or Landrätin will play a crucial role in shaping the district's future for the next eight years.
