Gifhorn's Sports Federation Leads Democracy Initiative Through Community Engagement

The County Sports Federation of Gifhorn (KreisSportBund Gifhorn) has been chosen as the official partner for the Demokratie leben! (Democracy in Action!) project. The initiative aims to strengthen democratic values and community cohesion across Gifhorn District. Sports clubs will play a central role in bringing people together and fostering active participation.

The project builds on the federation's existing work in democracy and integration. Through sports, people of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs connect in a shared space. Clubs also teach democratic principles in practice—members learn to collaborate, make joint decisions, and respect differing views.

Since its launch, *Demokratie leben!* in Gifhorn has already delivered a range of activities. These include public readings and debates, an inclusive sports festival with a youth discussion forum, and co-design opportunities for Christopher Street Day (CSD). A festival celebrating Germany's Basic Law also took place. A dedicated staff position, hosted by an external provider, supports the project's content development and funding applications. The County Sports Federation will work closely with Gifhorn District to expand these efforts. Their broad reach across diverse groups made them the strongest candidate for the role. The German Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth is funding the initiative, ensuring its long-term impact.

The federation has expressed enthusiasm for its new role in shaping a more inclusive and democratic community. Local organisations are encouraged to take part, with the district actively promoting their involvement. The project will continue to use sports as a tool for social connection and civic engagement in Gifhorn.
