The Catholic kindergarten Maria Himmelfahrt in Gladbach has been closed since spring due to a severe mouse infestation. The local health department's discovery of the issue led to the building's shutdown. The city portal has agreed to cover 65% of the total renovation costs, amounting to 755,918 euros. The remaining 35% will be covered by other sources. The renovation work will commence during the current closure to avoid disrupting ongoing operations.

The building's problems were found to extend beyond the pest issue. The entire structure is outdated and in urgent need of renovation, with total costs estimated at around 1.16 million euros. Mayor Peter Jung has emphasized the city's support for the renovation, stating that ensuring children and families have access to a well-equipped kindergarten is a priority.
