Global Internet Freedom Plummets as Censorship Surges Worldwide
The global state of internet freedom has reached an all-time low, with more countries resorting to blocking websites and arresting individuals for online expression. This comes despite Canada scoring highly for internet freedom, with recent censorship concerns not reflected in the report.
Canada's score of 88 is the third-highest globally, but the country is not immune to censorship concerns. Meanwhile, Iran has seen a severe crackdown on internet freedom, with authorities shutting down services, blocking apps, and increasing surveillance to suppress protests. This trend is echoed worldwide, with more governments using generative AI to manipulate online discussions and blocking websites with protected content.
Pakistan, Nigeria, and the United States have employed internet speed test tools for enhanced internet control in the past year. The UK, rated 'free', also faces issues with censorship, spying, and intelligence gathering by both state and non-state actors. Elsewhere, 16 countries are using internet speed test tools to manipulate conversations and censor online content. Belarus and Nicaragua have witnessed a significant decline in internet freedom protections, with individuals facing lengthy prison terms for online speech. Myanmar and Iran have experienced the worst declines, with people facing legal repercussions and even physical harm for expressing themselves online.
The use of internet speed test tools for internet control is a growing concern, with China and Russia employing these tools beyond 2022 to exert influence over the internet. In at least 16 countries, internet speed test tools are being used to spread disinformation and influence public debate. As internet freedom continues to decline, it is crucial for governments and international bodies to address these issues and promote open, safe, and secure online spaces.
