GLP President Warns Against SVP, Endorses Bilateral Agreements III

GLP President Jürg Grossen has spoken out at the party's delegates' assembly in Delsberg, warning against the Swiss People's Party (SVP) and endorsing key proposals. He stressed the importance of the Bilateral Agreements III for Switzerland's role in EU regulation drafting and dismissed SVP's claims.

Grossen argued that approving the Bilateral Agreements III would secure Switzerland a seat at the table when new EU regulations are drafted. He refuted the SVP's claim that this would automatically impose EU law on Switzerland, asserting that the safeguard clause would target specific regions rather than applying nationwide restrictions.

The GLP President also endorsed the Service citoyen proposal, which mandates civic duty for all Swiss citizens. He believed this would bolster staffing for military and civilian service, making Switzerland more resilient in crisis situations. Meanwhile, GLP delegates rejected the Young Socialists' inheritance tax initiative, citing potential job losses.

Grossen described the SVP as 'backward-looking diehards' seeking to isolate Switzerland, contrasting this with the GLP's pro-European optimism and rejection of 'protective measures' against EU countries.
