Goethe's Son August's Grave Restored in Rome

The grave of August von Goethe, son of renowned German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, has been restored at the Cimitero Acattolico in Rome. The restoration marks the 195th anniversary of August's death and has been funded by the Friends of the Goethe National Museum in Weimar.

The restored headstone was designed by renowned Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. Italian heritage protection laws ensured that the original inscription, which omits August's first name, remained unchanged. The restoration includes a new marble plaque bearing August's likeness, replacing a bronze copy. A signpost now points to the grave, bearing August's full name, 'August von Goethe'. The 40-year-old August died during a trip to Italy in 1830, leaving behind his father's only surviving son to reach adulthood.

The restored grave of August von Goethe, a significant figure in German literary history, stands as a testament to his legacy. The Friends of the Goethe National Museum in Weimar have ensured that his final resting place is preserved and honoured, providing a fitting tribute to the son of the great Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
