Gomel Region's Employment Drops to 551,500 Despite Government Efforts
Employment figures in the Gomel Region, Belarus, have shown a mixed picture in recent months. While there was a temporary increase in August, the number of officially employed residents has since dropped to 551,500 in September, according to official data.
The region has seen a steady decline in official employment numbers since May, despite government efforts to boost employment rates. A campaign launched in April 2025 to tackle 'social parasites'—those not engaged in the economy—has had little impact on employment figures. As of May 1, around 10,000 people in Gomel's Sovetskyi District fell into this category.
Compared to last September, the workforce increased by only 100 people. However, this growth was short-lived, with the numbers dropping again in September. This decline contrasts with the national employment rate, which reached a historical high of 69.1% in October 2025 due to government policies.
The Gomel Region's employment numbers have been volatile, with a temporary increase followed by a decline. Despite government efforts to address 'social parasites' and boost employment, the region's official employment numbers continue to fluctuate. As of September, 551,500 residents were officially employed, highlighting the need for further initiatives to stabilize and grow the workforce.
