Goodyear to Close Historic Fulda 'Gummi' Plant in 2025, Impacting 500 Jobs
Tyre giant Goodyear is set to close its historic 'Gummi' plant in Fulda, Germany, by the end of 2025. The closure, due to overcapacities and high cost pressure, will impact around 500 employees and mark the end of a 125-year era in the city.
The shutdown, scheduled for July 1, 2023, follows a series of job cuts, including the reduction of around 600 jobs in Hanau in 2019 and the planned tire production phase-out in Fürstenwalde by the end of 2027. Demolition of the production facilities is set to begin in October 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of March 2026.
The future of the plant site remains uncertain, with talks ongoing. While the production brand will be preserved and continue operating at other locations within the Goodyear Dunlop group, there's no public information about the site's future use after production ends.
The closure of the Fulda 'Gummi' plant is a significant blow to the region, affecting nearly 500 jobs. Goodyear's decision highlights the challenges faced by traditional industries in the face of evolving market demands and economic pressures.
