Google’s $300M Initiative Aims to Rescue Struggling Minority-Led Newsrooms
A new initiative called News Navigators has launched in Miami to support struggling local media outlets. Funded by the Google News Initiative, the program will provide financial aid and training to 60 alternative news organizations led by Black or Latino executives across the U.S. The program comes at a critical time for local journalism. Since 2004, over 1,800 U.S. communities have lost their primary news source, and more than 16,600 newsroom jobs have disappeared since 2020. The economic downturn in media has hit minority-led outlets particularly hard, prompting Google to step in with a $300 million investment over three years. The $10,000 grants and tailored support aim to help participating outlets explore new ways to survive in a rapidly changing media landscape. With applications closing on November 30, eligible news organizations have a limited window to secure a place in the program’s first round.
