Goslar District’s Committee for Education, Culture, and Sport wrapped up its latest meeting in under 40 minutes on Wednesday. The short session covered key decisions, including funding for winter sports and updates on major construction projects. A legal dispute over a tendering process also emerged as a pressing issue for the district.

The committee began by approving €15,000 to support the Sonnenberg cross-country skiing and biathlon facility in the Harz region. The funds will address operating deficits for 2024, ensuring the snowmaking system remains functional. All members voted unanimously in favour of the measure.

Discussions then turned to next year’s budget and upcoming projects. The most expensive current undertaking is the €17.3 million expansion of the Werner-von-Siemens Gymnasium in Bad Harzburg. Another major project, the demolition and reconstruction of the sports hall in Liebenburg, carries an estimated cost of €13 million.

The meeting also introduced a new career guidance fair format. Unlike the previous #TschüssSchule event, the updated version will include afternoon and evening sessions at DEJAVU. This change aims to accommodate those unable to attend morning workshops, offering vocational and academic advice in a more relaxed setting.

However, legal troubles overshadowed some of the progress. A law firm from southern Germany has filed a lawsuit against the district, alleging a breach of the Legal Services Act during the Europe-wide tendering process for the sports hall project. The case will go before the Regional Court in Braunschweig on December 9.

The committee’s decisions will see continued support for local sports facilities and a revamped career fair. Yet, the district now faces a court battle over procurement procedures, with a hearing scheduled for early December. The outcome could impact how future construction tenders are handled in the region.
