Göttingen braces for massive school strike against 2026 conscription plans

A major school strike will take place in Göttingen on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Organised by Schulstreik gegen Wehrpflicht Göttingen, the protest targets the planned reintroduction of conscription in 2026. The main event is part of a wider wave of demonstrations across Germany that day.

The rally begins at 12:00 in front of the Old Town Hall, where the city's iconic Gänseliesel statue stands. Before the main event, six separate marches will set off from different schools at 11:30. These feeder groups will all arrive at the central location by noon.

Up to 1,000 participants are expected to attend. The demonstration will run until 3:00 p.m., with organisers warning of likely traffic disruptions in the city centre. City officials have confirmed that the protest has been officially registered and approved in advance.

The action forms part of a national campaign against the government's proposal to bring back mandatory military service next year. Similar strikes are planned in other cities on the same day.

The rally will end at 3:00 p.m., though traffic delays may persist afterwards. Organisers have followed all legal requirements, securing permission from Göttingen's administration. The event marks one of the largest local protests against the 2026 conscription reforms.
