Göttingen seeks 1,600 volunteers for September 2026 local elections

Göttingen is looking for at least 1,600 volunteers to help run polling stations for the upcoming local elections. The vote will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2026, and officials are urging residents to step forward and assist.

Anyone aged 18 or over who lives in Göttingen can apply, even without prior experience. The role involves managing ballot casting and counting votes on election day. Volunteers will receive a refreshment allowance of up to €55 for their work.

Interested residents have several ways to sign up. They can fill out an online form at https://wahlen.unser-website/wahlhelfende/, send an email to wahlhelfereinsatz@unser-website, or call +49 551 400-5080 for more details. The city has not released figures on how many poll workers were needed in past elections. No comparisons with other Lower Saxony municipalities are available either, as records focus mainly on election observer roles rather than staffing numbers.

The call for volunteers comes as Göttingen prepares for its next local elections. With 1,600 positions to fill, the city relies on residents to ensure polling stations run smoothly. Those who sign up will play a direct role in the democratic process while receiving a small allowance for their time.
