Government approves billions in deals ahead of landmark election day and referendum
The government has approved major procurement deals while preparing for simultaneous national elections and a referendum. Finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed confirmed that extra funds will cover the costs of holding both events on the same election day.
The advisory council committee on government purchases greenlit imports worth billions, alongside key infrastructure and energy projects.
The committee authorised the purchase of 50,000 tonnes of non-Basmati rice from Singapore-based M/S Agrocrop International Pte Ltd for Tk 216.43 crore. Another deal involved importing 75,000 tonnes of fertiliser: 40,000 tonnes of urea from Saudi Arabia and 35,000 tonnes of muriate of potash from Russia.
Alongside agricultural imports, the committee approved road infrastructure projects in Brahmanbaria and Sunamganj. They also re-fixed the levelized tariff for seven power plants, following separate proposals from the Power Division.
Addressing the Election Commission’s needs, Ahmed acknowledged the logistical challenge of running elections and a referendum together. The budget will be increased to cover additional security and personnel costs for the dual election event.
The finance adviser assured there would be no fund shortages for the Jatiya Sangsad elections and referendum. The approved imports and infrastructure projects will proceed as planned. Extra allocations will ensure both events run smoothly on the same election day.
