Governor James Orengo Returns to Siaya County After Medical Treatment

Governor James Orengo of Siaya County returned to Kenya on August 5, 2025, putting an end to weeks of speculation and uncertainty. His prolonged absence had caused anxiety and disrupted county operations, leading to concerns over a governance crisis.

Upon his return, Orengo was met with a heroic welcome as the crowd cheered him on, causing Governor Gladys Wanga to halt her speech. Orengo arrived at the burial venue in style, dressed in a dark blue shirt and a light blue pair of trousers.

The reason for Orengo's absence was due to medical treatment abroad for illness, not poisoning as rumored. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Siaya Deputy Governor, William Oduol, have dismissed the false rumors of poisoning and a fake resignation letter circulating online. They confirmed that Orengo is still the Siaya Governor and merely receiving treatment.

During his address to the residents, Orengo criticized the government for not recognizing leaders in the country by naming roads after them. He mentioned Jaramogi Oginga Odinga as a leader who deserves a road named after him in Nairobi.

The ODM party has also dismissed the fake letter as disinformation. Governor Orengo clarified that he is still the governor of Siaya County and did not make any further comments about his recent absence.

In the meantime, Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode had been representing Orengo at county functions during his absence. The strained working relationship between Governor Orengo and his deputy was also noted as contributing to the leadership challenges in Siaya County during this period.

The circulation of the fake resignation letter and the subsequent governance disruptions caused by Orengo's absence have been a topic of concern. However, with the governor's return, normal operations are expected to resume in Siaya County.
