Govt to draw FY27 budget outline on Dec 22

Bangladesh’s interim government will outline the national budget for the 2026-27 financial year on December 22. The meeting, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, will also review adjustments to the current fiscal year’s spending plans. Key economic officials, including the central bank governor and finance secretary, will attend the discussions.

Finance Secretary Khairuzzman Majumder will present the proposed budget framework for FY27. The draft suggests a total outlay of around Tk 8.50 lakh crore, targeting 6% GDP growth. This comes as the FY26 budget may see a Tk 20,000 crore reduction, bringing it down to Tk 7.9 lakh crore.

The revised figures for the current year include a likely GDP growth adjustment to 5% and an inflation rate of 7%. The Annual Development Programme (ADP) could also face a cut of about Tk 30,000 crore, reducing it to Tk 2,00,000 crore.

Economic experts, including former Bangladesh Bank governor Ahsan H Mansur, finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, and planning adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, will join the talks. The new government, elected in February 2026, will then have until June to finalise the FY27 budget.

The December 22 meeting will set the stage for the incoming administration’s financial policies. Once approved, the revised FY26 budget and the FY27 outline will guide economic planning over the next 18 months. No individual has yet been named to oversee the final assessment of the budget plan.
