Greece Bolsters Bulgaria's Defense with Patriots and F-16s Against Missile Threats
Greece has deployed military assets to support Bulgaria against potential missile threats. Defence Minister Nikos Dendias visited Sofia on Thursday to finalise the agreement. The move follows Bulgaria's request for enhanced air defence capabilities.
During the visit, Dendias met with Bulgarian Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov. Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening European security ties. Discussions also covered broader regional challenges with Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov, who praised Greece as one of Bulgaria's closest allies.
Greece has provided a Patriot air defence system and four F-16 fighter jets. The Patriot battery is positioned in northern Greece, near the Bulgarian border. Two of the F-16s remain in the same region, while the other two are stationed on the Aegean island of Limnos.
The deployment aims to counter long-range ballistic missile threats, particularly from Iran. Beyond defence, Greece and Bulgaria continue collaborating on transport, energy, and wider regional projects.
Bulgaria now has additional air defence coverage through Greece's Patriot system and combat aircraft. The reinforced partnership highlights ongoing military and strategic cooperation between the two nations. Officials from both countries have emphasised the importance of joint security efforts in the region.
