Greece Transforms Elefsina Port Into a Major US-Backed Logistics Hub

Greece is pushing ahead with plans to expand operations at Elefsina Port, turning it into a key transit and logistics hub. The move comes as part of wider efforts to boost economic ties with the USA and reduce foreign influence in the region. New legislation will allow Onex Shipyards & Technologies to grow beyond shipbuilding into cargo, energy, and defense sectors.

The Greek government has announced a legislative initiative to broaden the scope of Elefsis Shipyards. Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos confirmed the changes, which aim to counter external economic influence in the area. Under the new rules, Onex—backed by US financing—can now diversify into commercial transport, port management, energy projects, and defense.

The expansion of Elefsina Port will allow Onex to move into multiple industries, from shipping to defense. Greece’s legislative push strengthens its role as an energy and logistics center while tightening cooperation with the USA. The changes also aim to limit external economic influence in the region.
