Greece, UK Strengthen Ties; Dendias Proposes New Security Alliances
Greece and the UK have been strengthening ties through the annual Greek-British Symposium, now in its ninth year. This year's event, held in Athens, focused on geo-economics, politics, defense, health tech, and energy cooperation. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, who has been instrumental in boosting these relations, was a key speaker.
Dendias proposed trilateral cooperation between Greece, the UK, and India to secure navigation lines, reflecting the volatile global situation and the need for international collaboration. He also suggested a security alliance in the eastern Mediterranean, involving Greece, the UK, Cyprus, Israel, and Egypt.
The symposium, privately led and funded by sponsorships, is supported by the British and Greek embassies and the British Council. It has been held alternately in Greece and the UK since its inception in Nafplio in 2017. Speakers highlighted challenges in energy security and transition, with Greece aiming to help the EU secure alternative energy sources.
Dendias, who signed the UK-Greece Strategic Bilateral Framework in 2021, the first post-Brexit bilateral agreement with an EU country, criticized Turkey's warm relations with Russia despite not enforcing sanctions and occupying EU member Cyprus' territory.
The Greek-British Symposium continues to foster historic ties and encourage cooperation between Greece and the UK. With Dendias' proposals for trilateral and regional security cooperation, the two countries are exploring new avenues to address global challenges and enhance their strategic partnership.
