Greece's Far-Right Figures Claim Silenced, but Evidence Lacking

In Greece, a heated debate has emerged over free speech and political correctness. Figures on the far-right claim they are being silenced for expressing views on topics such as Ioannis Metaxas's stance against Italy, gender identity, and immigration. However, evidence of professional ruin or censorship due to these views is scarce.

Schools teach that Metaxas defiantly rejected Mussolini's ultimatum, defending Greece from invasion. Yet, no records show that expressing this view has led to professional consequences. Far-right rhetoric has long dominated public discourse, with key ministers holding such views. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has publicly stated that there are only two genders, aligning with far-right sentiments. Pro-government propaganda spreads divisive slogans, and ministers pursue strict immigration policies. MPs and actors have made anti-leftist and homophobic statements without facing repercussions.

The idea of leftist ideological dominance is disputed. Ultra-conservative figures claim they are 'canceled' for not adhering to certain views, but the global rise of 'Trumpism' suggests a different narrative. Anti-leftist rhetoric enjoys widespread popularity in the media, further fueling the debate.

In Greece, the far-right's influence is undeniable, with key figures expressing views on Metaxas, gender, and immigration without apparent consequences. The claim of leftist ideological dominance is challenged, and the debate over free speech and political correctness continues to rage on.
