Banaszak: "Left" is not a swear word for me today - Green Party leader warns climate policies are losing public trust and urgency
Green Party co-leader Felix Banaszak has spoken out about the growing disconnect between climate policies and public sentiment. He acknowledges that many people, struggling with everyday costs, resent terms like 'flight shame' and feel alienated by environmental debates. His warnings come as interest in climate protection appears to be fading, even among younger generations.
Banaszak’s own path into politics began after his daughter’s birth, when the urgency of climate change became personal. A resident of Düsseldorf, he now faces an uphill battle in the Bundestag, where his speeches on environmental issues are often met with silence, yawns, or mocking laughter.
He argues that climate action must not punish those already under financial strain. For many, owning a car still symbolises freedom, and long-haul travel remains a rare luxury. Instead, he insists that the wealthy—who contribute most to global warming—should bear the cost of green measures.
Despite the challenges, Banaszak sees no contradiction between the Greens’ principles and their political success. He stresses that the party must remain inclusive, welcoming people from all backgrounds to keep climate protection relevant.
The decline in public engagement, particularly among young people, worries Banaszak. He believes the movement must adapt its messaging to avoid further alienation. Without broader support, he warns, even well-intentioned climate policies risk losing their impact.
