Green Party Proposes Animal-Friendly Fireworks for German City Events
The Green Party in a German city has proposed a novel idea to make fireworks displays more animal-friendly. The proposal, first discussed in the Environmental Committee on October 2nd and later in the Committee for Kirchweihs, Markets, and Similar Events, aims to reduce the impact of fireworks on birds and pets during events like the Michaelis Kirchweih.
The Green Party's proposal suggests avoiding loud bangs for opening and closing fireworks at major city events. This comes after a successful compromise in Burgfarrnbach, where initial and final bangs were eliminated in fireworks for bird protection. The Greens' Further City Council faction has put forward this idea to adapt pyrotechnic displays considering animal welfare.
The city administration and event organizers are encouraged to collaborate on this matter. However, the debate on changing other fireworks is still in its early stages, and outcomes remain uncertain. Meanwhile, drone shows, seen as an alternative, are currently too expensive compared to classic fireworks, according to the city. A recent drone show in China went awry, with sparks raining from the sky and causing burns, raising safety concerns.
During the Michaelis Kirchweih, there are two fireworks displays at 10 PM each day. The Green Party's proposal seeks to minimize the disturbance to animals during these displays.
