Green Party pushes for broader heat pump subsidies amid conservative resistance

The Green Party is pushing for wider government support to help low-income homeowners install heat pumps. Current subsidies cover up to 70 percent of costs, but party leaders argue this still leaves many struggling to afford the switch. Co-leader Felix Banaszak has accused conservative politicians of blocking progress with ideological opposition.

Banaszak criticised Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) for leading what he called a 'culture war against heat pumps'. He claimed her proposed cuts to heating subsidies were driven by politics rather than practical concerns. CSU leader Markus Söder was also singled out for aligning with Reiche’s position.

If adopted, the expanded subsidies would make heat pumps more accessible to struggling households. The Greens’ plan seeks to eliminate financial risks through leasing, loans, and full funding for those in need. The debate now rests on whether conservative lawmakers will support the changes or maintain their opposition.
