Green Party slams Merz’s coalition for abandoning climate commitments in Europe
Green Party leader Katharina Dröge has sharply criticised Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his coalition government. She accused them of pursuing misguided policies that weaken climate protection and create instability across Germany. Her comments came after the government announced plans to soften the EU’s proposed ban on combustion engines.
Dröge targeted the black-red coalition, led by Merz’s CDU, for rolling back environmental commitments. She claimed the move proves climate action is no longer a priority for the government. Her remarks also highlighted broader concerns about the administration’s direction in Europe.
Dröge’s criticism comes as the coalition faces growing pressure over its policy shifts. The government’s stance on the EU combustion engine ban has drawn particular backlash. Meanwhile, public confidence in the administration’s ability to handle key issues, such as immigration policies and social security administration, appears to be wavering.
