Green Party slams U.S. airstrikes on Caracas as illegal escalation

The Green Party has strongly criticised recent U.S. airstrikes on Caracas, calling them a violation of international law. Katharina Dröge, the party’s parliamentary leader, described the attacks as a dangerous military escalation that risks further destabilising the region.

Dröge condemned the U.S. action under Donald Trump’s administration, arguing that it relies on the principle of might over right. She warned that such moves set a dangerous precedent, encouraging other nations to ignore international legal norms. The Green Party is now pressing the German government to publicly urge the U.S. to de-escalate and respect Venezuela’s sovereignty.

In her statement, Dröge also acknowledged the political situation in Venezuela. While she recognised Nicolás Maduro’s government as authoritarian and responsible for serious human rights abuses, she insisted that military intervention was not the solution. The risk, she argued, is a more unpredictable and volatile global security environment if other countries follow the U.S. example. Kerstin Möller, deputy leader of the SPD parliamentary group, echoed the criticism. She labelled the U.S. operation a serious breach of international law, reinforcing calls for restraint and diplomatic solutions instead of military force.

The Green Party’s demands focus on immediate de-escalation and a return to international legal frameworks. They want Germany to take a clear stance against the U.S. strikes while continuing to address human rights concerns in Venezuela through diplomatic channels. The situation remains tense as political leaders assess the broader implications of the military action.
