Green Party Urges CDU/CSU to Back FM Wadephul's Cautious Syria Stance

Green Party politician Irene Mihalic has publicly urged the CDU/CSU alliance to take the views of their own Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, more seriously regarding the ongoing situation in Syria. The SPD and Green politicians have also expressed their support for Wadephul's stance on the matter.

Wadephul, who has been in office since May 6, 2025, has stated that a return of Syrian nationals to Syria in the short term is not feasible. This position has drawn criticism from within his party, with some members advocating for more aggressive deportation policies and return agreements with the Syrian government. However, Mihalic has criticized this armchair judgment of conditions in Syria, suggesting that a more nuanced understanding is necessary.

SPD foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner has agreed with Wadephul's assessment of the situation in Syria, praising him for viewing humanity as a standard and compass, not opposed to national interests. Stegner believes that Wadephul's approach is more realistic and humane, considering the devastation caused by the civil war and the current conditions in Syria.

The debate over deportations to Syria continues within the German coalition, with Wadephul's cautious approach drawing both criticism and support. While some within his party advocate for more aggressive policies, SPD and Green politicians have expressed their agreement with Wadephul's assessment of the situation, emphasizing the importance of humanity and realism in decision-making.
