Green Week - How Technology is Transforming Agriculture and Nutrition
Germany’s agricultural and food sectors are embracing digital change at a rapid pace. New figures reveal how technology is reshaping farming, dining, and shopping habits across the country. The shift comes as Green Week, a major trade fair for agriculture and food trends, opens today in Berlin.
Digital tools have become standard on German farms. Nine out of ten agricultural businesses now rely on GPS-guided machinery, livestock software, or other tech solutions. A smaller but growing number—28 percent—use social media platforms like Instagram or Facebook to connect with customers or share updates.
AI adoption remains modest but is gaining interest. Currently, 9 percent of farms use artificial intelligence, while another 38 percent are exploring its potential. Meanwhile, private gardens are also getting smarter, with 18 percent of Germans using robotic lawnmowers and 8 percent trying smart gardening tools.
Online discovery is changing how people dine and shop. Over 40 percent of Germans have visited a café or restaurant after finding it on the internet. Nearly a third of online shoppers bought groceries or drinks in the past year. Food waste apps like Too Good To Go are widely supported, with 68 percent of Germans viewing them as essential for cutting waste.
The numbers highlight a clear trend: digital tools are now central to Germany’s food and farming industries. From high-tech farms to online grocery orders, technology is influencing every step of production and consumption. Green Week’s opening in Berlin puts these innovations in the spotlight once again.
