Kretschmann urges Greens to relax regarding poll results - Greens face uphill battle in Baden-Württemberg’s 2026 state election
The Green Party in Baden-Württemberg is preparing for the state election on 8 March 2026 with Cem Özdemir as its lead candidate. He will take over from long-serving Minister President Winfried Kretschmann, who has urged the party to stay focused despite disappointing poll numbers. Current surveys show the Greens lagging behind both the CDU and the far-right AfD.
The latest opinion polls place the Greens at just 20%, trailing the CDU by nine points. The party last held the lead in March 2023, but support has since declined. According to a recent SWR and Stuttgarter Zeitung survey, the Greens now sit in third place, narrowly behind the AfD.
The Greens will enter the 2026 election with Özdemir at the helm, replacing Kretschmann after years in office. The party’s performance will depend on whether it can regain momentum before polling day. For now, the CDU holds a steady lead, while the AfD remains a close competitor.
