Greens in Saxony-Anhalt prepare for state election - Greens in Saxony-Anhalt pick 2024 election leader amid polling struggles
The Greens in Saxony-Anhalt are choosing their candidates for the 2024 state election this weekend. A party conference in Wittenberg will decide who leads the list, with Susan Sziborra-Seidlitz running for the top position. The party currently holds six seats but faces uncertainty in upcoming polls.
The Greens entered the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament in 2021 after winning 5.9% of the vote. Since then, they have maintained six seats in the legislature. Now, as the 2024 election approaches, the party is gathering in Wittenberg to finalise its candidate list.
Susan Sziborra-Seidlitz, a state lawmaker and co-chair, is campaigning for the lead position. In the 2022 federal election, the Greens’ state list included names like Alexander Raue, Susanne Hennig-Wellsow, Katja Pähle, Steffen Dittes, and Katja Gerhardt, with Sziborra-Seidlitz taking the sixth spot.
Recent opinion polls, however, show the party struggling to reach the 5% threshold needed to stay in parliament. This puts their future representation at risk.
The Greens will confirm their 2024 state election candidates by the end of the weekend. If they fail to secure at least 5% of the vote, they could lose their seats in the Saxony-Anhalt parliament. The decision in Wittenberg will shape their campaign in the coming months.
