Green Party makes affordable housing a key issue for municipal election - Greens Push for Student Housing Revolution in Bavaria Ahead of 2026 Elections

The Greens in Bavaria are pushing for significant changes in student housing and booking, ahead of the March 8, 2026, local elections. They propose a legally binding guarantee for dormitory places and a 'Special Housing Fund for Students and Trainees' with at least €50 million annually. The party aims to defend their 2020 local election result and has made affordable accommodation a key issue for the upcoming vote.

The Greens' party conference in Erlangen recently approved a motion calling for fresh funding and tax policy reforms to promote affordable accommodation. They are demanding an immediate €1 billion in housing funds for municipalities and want to empower local governments to introduce a 'Property Tax C' to target speculative landowners. The party's youth wing is specifically calling for affordable accommodation for students and trainees.

Current polls place the Greens in third, behind the CSU and the far-right AfD. However, Green Party state leader Gisela Sengl has accused the government of failing to address the housing crisis seriously. She believes that the Greens' proposals will resonate with voters and help them defend their 2020 result.

The Greens' focus on affordable accommodation, including dedicated funding for student and trainee booking, is set to be a key talking point in the upcoming Bavarian local elections. While the party's local representatives supporting these initiatives remain to be determined, their conference-approved motion and strong stance on the issue indicate a commitment to addressing the housing crisis.
