Greens surge ahead in Herbolzheim's 2026 state election shake-up

The Greens have become the strongest party in Herbolzheim following the 2026 Baden-Württemberg state election. Their success came through a strong showing in the proportional representation vote, where they secured 30.5 percent. Meanwhile, the CDU led in first-past-the-post ballots, reflecting a divided political landscape.

In the first-vote results, CDU candidate Stefanie Wernet took the lead with 32.1 percent. This placed her ahead of Rüdiger Tonojan from the Greens, who received 23.8 percent. The AfD's Rolf Heckmann followed with 21.6 percent, marking a significant rise in right-wing support compared to 2021.

The Greens dominated the second-vote count, winning 30.5 percent, while the CDU trailed at 27.2 percent. The AfD's gains were notable, increasing by 11.3 percentage points since the last election. In contrast, the FDP saw a decline, losing 5.9 points, with their candidate Matthias Mand securing just 3.3 percent of first votes.

Other candidates included Martina Fuhrmann of the SPD with 8.4 percent, Michaela Rotermund-Kaplan of the Left Party with 4.9 percent, and Christina Hesse from the Free Voters at 4.1 percent. The combined share of the Green-CDU coalition grew slightly from 57.0 percent in 2021 to 57.7 percent in this election.

The election results highlight shifting voter priorities in Herbolzheim. Environmental concerns boosted the Greens, while conservative values kept the CDU competitive in first votes. The AfD's substantial gains also signal growing support for right-wing policies in the region.
