The Green Party has secured victory in Kassel's local elections, taking 22.4% of the vote. The result comes despite a notable drop in support compared to 2021. Voter turnout reached 50.9%, well above the Hessian average of five years ago.

Initial counts show the Greens leading, though their share fell by 6.3 percentage points since the last election. The CDU followed closely with 21.7%, gaining 2.5 points from 2021. The SPD came third at 19.8%, a decline of 4.8 points.

The Left Party saw a rise, securing 14.5%—up 3.3 points from 2021. The AfD also grew significantly, reaching 12.1%, an increase of 6.5 points. Meanwhile, the FDP dropped to 3.1%, losing 2.5 points compared to the previous vote. So far, only ballots with a single cross for an entire party list have been processed. Votes with individual candidate preferences remain uncounted and will be tallied in the coming days.

The final distribution of seats will depend on the remaining ballots. With turnout at 50.9%, Kassel's voters showed stronger engagement than the 2021 Hessian average. The Greens hold the lead, but shifts in support for multiple parties will shape the new city council.
