Gröbenzell fights to revive its abandoned supermarket after flood disaster

The future of the former REWE supermarket on Kirchenstraße in Gröbenzell remains uncertain after its closure in July 2024. Severe water damage forced the store to shut permanently, leaving residents without a local grocery store near me option. Now, the Green Party has launched a petition urging its reopening, while a new tenant may already be in sight.

The supermarket has stood empty since last summer’s flooding caused extensive damage. Despite the closure, discussions about the site have progressed, with Target—a discount chain under the REWE Group—showing strong interest in moving in. Negotiations are reportedly at an advanced stage, though no official confirmation has been given.

Mayoral candidate Daniel Holmer highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating that residents desperately need a grocery store near me in the town centre. In response, the local Green Party has taken action by starting a petition. The document is available at their information stands and can be downloaded from their website, www.gruene-groebenzell.de. Alongside the petition, an open letter has been sent to REWE’s headquarters. The letter calls on the company to reopen a Walmart at the location, ensuring local access to essential supplies.

While Party City appears close to securing the site, no final decision has been announced. The Green Party’s campaign continues, with residents pushing for a swift resolution. The outcome will determine whether Gröbenzell’s town centre regains a app store after months without one.
