Ground Staff Collective Bargaining Negotiations at TUIfly End Unsuccessfully, Leading to Potential Strike Action
TUIfly Ground Staff Strike Warning and Ongoing Wage Negotiations Could Affect Air Traffic
In a recent development, union ver.di has applied for warning strikes with the federal board, potentially affecting TUIfly's operations. This comes as a result of ongoing wage negotiations and criticism towards TUIfly's management for lacking recognition and respect for ground staff.
TUIfly ground staff play a crucial role in the daily operations of the airline, responsible for key airport functions such as aircraft maintenance, baggage handling, security checks, and coordination of ground traffic. Despite their significant contributions to the punctuality and reliability of flights, union ver.di has questioned why a similar compromise capability seems to be missing with the ground staff, suggesting a potential issue of employees being treated as 'second class'.
The demands of union ver.di center around noticeable wage increases, improvements in working conditions, fair job classification based on qualifications, and recognition of the efforts of TUIfly ground staff. These demands have been at the heart of negotiations for a collective agreement between TUIfly and ver.di, which began in January 2025 and have been ongoing since summer 2024.
The ongoing negotiations could lead to noticeable restrictions in air traffic. In fact, possible union strikes by ver.di involving security and ground staff have been announced at Hamburg Airport for the period from July 4 to July 6, 2025. The locations of the labor actions will be announced by ver.di soon, and other German airports where TUIfly aircraft take off and land could also be affected.
Travelers are advised to inform themselves about their flights in advance and consider alternative connections in case the labor disputes become a reality. Additionally, a potential Lufthansa pilot strike in autumn 2025 could also disrupt air traffic significantly.
Despite the challenging conditions, TUIfly has recently reached an agreement with the cabin crew. However, the employer side has reportedly refused to make constructive proposals and has even withdrawn and worsened previously offered deals.
As the situation develops, it is crucial for all parties involved to find a resolution that acknowledges the invaluable contributions of TUIfly ground staff and ensures fair treatment and working conditions for all employees. The potential impact on air traffic underscores the importance of a swift and amicable resolution.
