Gütersloh restores three zebra crossings for safer pedestrian access
Gütersloh is bringing back three zebra crossings on Berliner Straße after they were removed five years ago. The new crossings aim to improve pedestrian safety near popular shops and public spaces. Work has already started, with final road markings expected in April.
The crossings were originally removed during the redesign of Berliner Straße and the renovation of Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. Now, three new ones are being installed at key locations: one in front of Konditorei Fritzenkötter, another outside Deichmann, and a third between Bücherschrank and Mam's Burger. Each crossing will be four metres wide to allow easy passage for wheelchairs and walkers.
Accessibility is a major focus of the project. Tactile paving with detectable ridges and studs will be added at each crossing to assist visually impaired pedestrians. Additional streetlamps will also be installed to improve visibility in the evenings and at night. The total cost of the project is estimated at around €65,000. A specialist contractor will paint the final road markings in April, provided the weather remains suitable.
The new crossings will restore safe pedestrian access in a busy part of Gütersloh. Once completed, they will provide better mobility for all residents, including those with disabilities. The city expects the improvements to enhance safety along Berliner Straße for years to come.
