Hà Nội unveils 100-year master plan to redefine urban growth and heritage
Hà Nội is set to develop a unified master plan with a 100-year vision to replace previous fragmented planning efforts. Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính highlighted the need for a cohesive strategy that reflects Vietnamese culture while driving modern growth. The plan was discussed at a high-level meeting with senior officials and city representatives.
The meeting brought together key leaders, including Politburo member Nguyễn Duy Ngọc, deputy prime ministers, and ministry heads. PM Chính commended Hà Nội for preparing three critical documents: a draft Politburo resolution, a revised Capital Law, and the new master plan. He described these as the political, legal, and spatial foundations for the city's future.
The draft plan introduces 11 major solutions to modernise the capital. It proposes a 'core-satellite' urban model to improve regional connectivity and reduce congestion. Nine development poles, nine key centres, and nine strategic corridors will strengthen links within the city and internationally.
Cultural and environmental priorities feature prominently. The plan outlines heritage landscapes along the Đà, Red, and Đường rivers, alongside a western green belt. Urban renewal, rural modernisation, and smart services are also central to the strategy.
To boost transparency and investment, the PM suggested creating a dedicated exhibition centre. This would showcase the master plan, enhance oversight, and attract funding for future projects.
The new master plan aims to resolve past inconsistencies while embedding Vietnamese identity into urban development. With clear spatial, legal, and political frameworks, Hà Nội intends to balance growth with heritage preservation. The next steps will focus on implementation and securing support for the long-term vision.
