Haim Aharon, Kerala's Jewish Heritage Champion, Passes Away at 78

Haim Aharon, a distinguished figure of the Mala Jewish community, has passed away at the age of 78. He was survived by his wife Noga, three daughters, and grandchildren. Haim's dedication to preserving Jewish heritage in Kerala and strengthening ties between India and Israel leaves a lasting legacy.

Born in Mala, Kerala, in 1947, Haim immigrated to Israel with his family in 1954. After a 43-year gap, he returned to his birthplace in 1997, visiting his ancestral home and the Mala Synagogue. This visit marked the beginning of his lifelong commitment to conserving Jewish legacy in Kerala.

Under Haim's leadership, Cochin Jews in Israel supported the Mala Synagogue's conservation. This not only preserved a significant piece of Jewish history but also strengthened cultural ties between India and Israel. His efforts were so impactful that two streets in his Israeli hometown were named after Mala and Cochin in his honour. Haim's most recent visit to Mala was in 2022, where he continued his work with local community members, including C Karmachandran.

Haim Aharon's passing is a great loss for the Jewish community in Kerala. However, his legacy of preserving Jewish heritage and fostering Indo-Israeli cultural ties continues to inspire. His dedication to his roots and his commitment to preserving history will be remembered.
