HAL & UAC Ink MoU to Produce Sukhoi Superjet 100 in India
Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to produce the Sukhoi Superjet 100 in India. The agreement was inked in Moscow on October 28, 2025, after years of discussion.
The Superjet 100, designed for regional air travel, can carry around 100 passengers. HAL has previously manufactured Russian-designed military aircraft under license in India, making this a natural progression. UAC, struggling to find foreign customers due to technical issues and inadequate support, sees this partnership as a lifeline. The Indian market is particularly relevant, given the country's UDAN program aimed at enhancing domestic air connectivity. As of now, all 137 Superjets in active commercial service are with Russian airlines.
The announcement comes amidst geopolitical tension. Days earlier, the Trump administration imposed new tariffs on India for not reducing its Russian oil imports. However, the MoU does not currently face any official obstacles.
The HAL-UAC partnership, if successful, could boost regional air connectivity in India. It also presents an opportunity for UAC to expand its customer base despite ongoing sanctions from the US and EU. However, the road ahead is not without challenges, and official announcements or press releases will likely provide further clarity on the progress of this collaboration.
