Halblech's Mayoral Election Could Reshape Leadership in Bavaria's Scenic Heartland
Residents of Halblech will head to the polls on March 8 to choose a new mayor and council. The vote comes as part of Bavaria's wider 2026 local elections, with preliminary results anticipated by the evening. The town, located in the scenic Ostallgäu district, has seen strong mayoral support in past elections—most recently in 2020, when Johann Gschwill won unopposed with 89 percent of the vote.
The election will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at local polling stations. If no candidate secures over 50 percent of the vote, a runoff will take place on March 22. Details on contenders or council seats remain unclear, as no public data exists on expected parties or voter groups.
Halblech sits within the Ostallgäu district, a 1,394-square-kilometre region known for its landscapes and historic sites. Popular attractions include the ruins of Eisenberg and Hohenfreyberg castles, Forggensee and Elbsee lakes, and the iconic Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. The area also features the Lech Falls, Füssen's treetop walk, and the Bavarian Kings Museum. Marktoberdorf serves as the district's administrative centre, alongside key towns like Füssen and Buchloe.
As of December 2024, Ostallgäu's population stood at 142,047. The district's mix of natural beauty and cultural landmarks continues to draw visitors year-round.
The March 8 vote will determine Halblech's leadership for the coming years. A decisive majority will avoid a runoff, but a second round remains possible. The outcome will shape local governance in this picturesque corner of Bavaria.
