Multiple Cannabis Clubs in Saxony-Anhalt - Half of Saxony-Anhalt's Cannabis Club Applications Approved; Ministers Demand Law Revisions

By the close of 2024, half of the cannabis club applications in Saxony-Anhalt had received approval. Meanwhile, justice ministers from Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, and Thuringia have demanded revisions to the cannabis law due to implementation challenges and insufficient crime reduction.

The Cannabis Act, which came into force on April 1, 2024, allows for private home cultivation and collective cultivation in non-commercial growing associations. Since then, several cannabis social clubs have opened in Saxony-Anhalt. However, the ministers warned of potential unacceptable social consequences if the law is not promptly evaluated.

By the end of 2024, the state’s Consumer Protection Agency had received 16 applications for collective cannabis cultivation and distribution. The ministers called for a fundamental reform of the Cannabis Act, aiming to combat organized crime and ensure public safety. They emphasized the need for a coordinated approach among the states to improve legal certainty and security.

With half of the cannabis club applications approved and several clubs now operating, the ministers' call for a prompt evaluation and revision of the cannabis law underscores the importance of addressing potential issues and ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens.
