Halle (Saale) to Hold Solemn Remembrance for November Pogroms' Victims
On November 9, 2024, Halle (Saale) will hold a solemn ceremony to remember the victims of the November Pogroms that took place 86 years ago. The event, starting at 5:00 PM on University Square, will honour the Jewish men forcibly taken from their homes and deported to Buchenwald concentration camp, including the destruction of the city's synagogue on Jerusalem Square.
The remembrance event will begin with welcoming remarks from Dr. Judith Marquardt, the city’s deputy mayor for culture and sports. Max Privorozki, chairman of Halle’s Jewish community, will offer words of remembrance, while Pastor Karsten Müller, representing the Working Group of Christian Churches, will give a greeting. The ceremony will include the reading of excerpts from laws and decrees targeting Jewish people between 1933 and 1938.
After the ceremony, attendees will proceed to the memorial on Jerusalem Square to recite the Jewish prayer for the dead. They will also have the opportunity to light candles and lay flowers at the memorial. The event is organised to commemorate the devastating events of 1938, when around 200 Jewish men were arrested and deported, and the synagogue on Jerusalem Square was burned down.
The city of Halle (Saale) invites all to join this remembrance event to honour the victims of the November Pogroms and to stand against hatred and intolerance. The event is part of the city's ongoing efforts to remember and learn from the past, ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated.
