Halle's Bold Plan to Bring North Sea Air Inland with Brine Fountains

A bold new project in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, plans to recreate the refreshing air of the North Sea right in the city centre. Dubbed Halle Breathes New Life, the initiative will introduce a unique 'brine experience fountain' designed to disperse salt-laden mist into the air. The scheme is part of a wider €126 million investment from Germany's federal special fund to revitalise the area around the marketplace. The centrepiece of the redesign involves transforming the existing ground-level fountains in front of the Market Church. Instead of fresh water, they will spray a fine mist containing 12% brine, mimicking the health benefits of coastal air. Project officials have described the goal as creating a microclimate reminiscent of the North Sea, but located hundreds of kilometres inland.

The brine itself will be sourced from the nearby Holzplatz site and transported via a dedicated pipeline. While the exact timeline for completion remains unclear, the plans also include upgrades to the marketplace and an expansion of its current fountain infrastructure. The aim is to turn the area into a fresh attraction for both locals and tourists. The concept draws inspiration from the well-documented advantages of salt-rich air, often associated with seaside resorts. By replicating these conditions, the city hopes to offer a distinctive experience that sets Halle apart from other urban destinations.

Backed by €126 million in federal funding, the project will reshape Halle's marketplace with a focus on health and novelty. The brine fountain, once operational, will provide a taste of coastal air without leaving Saxony-Anhalt. Officials anticipate the changes will draw more visitors while giving residents a unique public space to enjoy.
