Halle’s iconic riverside news stands face eviction after 30-year leases expire
The city of Halle (Saale) has ended the leases for two well-known riverside news stands, Boathouse No. 5 and Elfengrund. Officials claim the current agreements, some nearly 30 years old, no longer match today’s market rates or allow for cost adjustments. The move follows major upgrades to the promenade that have boosted the area’s popularity.
The decision comes after extensive renovations along the riverbank. These improvements have made the location more attractive, raising its rental value. City authorities argue that the outdated contracts prevent them from passing on operating expenses to the tenants.
New lease offers with updated terms have been presented to the operators. However, the future of the existing news stands remains unclear as talks continue. Despite the eviction notices, the city insists it wants to keep and grow food options by the river.
Plans are already in place to convert three other boathouses into fresh dining spots. These changes aim to modernise the area while maintaining its appeal to visitors.
The termination of the leases marks a shift in how the riverside space is managed. With renovations complete and demand rising, the city is pushing for contracts that reflect current conditions. The outcome for the affected stands will depend on ongoing negotiations, while new venues prepare to open in the repurposed boathouses.
