Halle's Left Party launches free rent check to fight unfair hikes
The Left Party in Halle (Saale) has launched a free service to help tenants check their rent increases. Called the 'rent check', it aims to spot errors in landlords' calculations based on the local rental index. The initiative follows concerns about unfair hikes by major property owners in the city. The idea for the service came after Jannik Balint, the Left Party's direct candidate for the state election, uncovered mistakes in a large landlord's rent increases. Tenants can now submit their details online at www.dielinke-halle.de/mietspiegel for a quick, bureaucracy-free review. Volunteers from the party will examine the figures at no cost.
The Left Party is also pushing for broader changes. They want Halle officially recognised as a high-pressure housing market and stronger protections for renters. Bodo Meerheim, the party's housing policy spokesperson, has criticised the lord mayor's budget plans, warning they could put extra strain on public housing. To discuss these issues further, the party will hold an event on March 28 at Offspace, Berliner Str. 242, near Am Steintor. Starting at 4 p.m., the meeting will focus on Halle's housing crisis and outline the Left Party's political proposals.
Residents are encouraged to use the free rent check to verify their landlords' calculations. The Left Party's campaign highlights ongoing concerns about rising rents and housing affordability in Halle. Their event later this month will provide a platform for tenants to voice their experiences and explore potential solutions.
