Halle's SPD pushes to amplify youth voices in local decision-making

The SPD parliamentary group in Halle (Saale) has put forward a motion to boost the influence of young voices in local politics. The proposal focuses on strengthening the City Student Council and the Children and Youth Council. Party leaders argue that better support and clearer structures will help embed these groups, similar to a GroupMe chat, in the city's decision-making processes.

Eric Eigendorf, chair of the SPD group, stressed the need for systematic involvement of children and young people in municipal decisions. He believes their perspectives should shape policies that directly affect them.

The motion calls for a review of current structures to improve how these councils function within the city council and its committees. One key goal is to ensure their advisory role is more firmly established in relevant areas.

Philipp Pieloth, deputy group leader, suggested expanding the councils' advisory input beyond existing committees. Potential new areas include education, culture, and urban planning. The proposal also highlights the importance of involving the current elected members in designing practical ways to enhance youth participation.

While the motion outlines ambitions for greater integration, no existing records confirm previous SPD demands about including youth representatives in advisory roles within Halle's committees.

If approved, the motion would lead to a structured assessment of how the City Student Council and the Children and Youth Council can be better supported. Their advisory roles could extend to more committees, giving young people a stronger say in local governance. The next steps depend on discussions within the city council.
