Halle's Thalia Theater wins four-week reprieve before closure

The former Thalia Theater in Halle (Saale) will stay open for another four weeks, closing on March 19. Despite ongoing financial and safety concerns, scheduled performances will continue as planned. Rumours about cancellations have spread, but organisers have confirmed events will go ahead.

The theater's main hall faces long-term closure due to budget cuts by the city administration. However, the Freie Spielstätten association has stepped in to fund an emergency generator, ensuring the building meets fire safety rules. This temporary solution allows the venue to operate for now.

Not all parts of the building are affected. The Puschkino cinema and Café Manzul will remain open, hosting events as usual. On March 4, Café Manzul will hold the theater talk show *OFFenBar*, focusing on the future of Halle's independent theater scene. Actors Martin Sommer and Jenne Krannich will join the discussion. Theatregoers can still attend upcoming shows, including *Extrawurst* by Theater Apron on March 7. While the main hall's future remains uncertain, the next few weeks will proceed without disruption.

The emergency generator provides a short-term fix, keeping the theater running until March 19. After that, the main hall's closure will take effect, though smaller spaces like the cinema and café stay operational. For now, performances and discussions will continue, offering audiences a final chance to experience the venue before changes take hold.
