Halle's youth services face collapse as funding crisis deepens
The Youth Council of Halle (Saale) has raised the alarm over a deepening crisis in child and youth welfare services. In an open letter, the group warned that many providers have drained their financial reserves, leaving key institutions on the brink of collapse. The situation has already forced cuts to programmes, staff layoffs, and the closure of several well-known facilities.
Services under Germany's Social Code Book VIII (SGB VIII) are legally required, not optional. Yet funding shortages have pushed providers to the limit. The Youth Council's letter highlights that without urgent action, more centres could shut down.
Several facilities in Halle have already closed or scaled back operations. Among them are the Blaue Elefant, Grüne Villa, Congrav, and Villa Jühling. Each closure removes a trusted space where young people built relationships with staff and peers. To push for change, the Youth Council has organised a public rally. On Wednesday, February 25, at 1 p.m., demonstrators will gather at Market Square to demand stable funding for youth services.
The crisis threatens the stability of child and youth welfare in Halle. While no recent reports confirm additional closures, the financial strain remains severe. The rally aims to pressure authorities into securing long-term support for these essential services.
