Hamburg Crowned Germany’s Top Urban Brand in 2025 City Monitor
Hamburg has emerged as Germany's strongest urban brand in the 2025 Brandmeyer City Brand Monitor, according to the Institute for Trade Research (IfH) Köln. The city has also shown impressive growth in tourism and continues to excel in smart city initiatives.
Hamburg's tourism sector has flourished in the first half of 2025, with a 2% increase in overnight stays, outpacing the national average growth of 0.1%. This success can be attributed to the city's forward-thinking approach in areas such as job opportunities and digitalization, as highlighted by the City Brand Monitor.
The monitor, an initiative by Brandmeyer Markenberatung, Innofact, and Public Marketing, reflects the subjective perceptions of around 10,000 German-speaking residents aged 18 to 79. Hamburg Marketing views these results as a testament to the city's consistent brand development and appreciation nationwide.
Hamburg's appeal extends to its status as a popular city-break destination, ranking among the top three along with Munich and Dresden. In the 2025 City Brand Monitor, Hamburg scored 7.5 out of 10 points, ahead of Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich. The city leads in categories such as likeability, having Germany’s most beautiful cityscape, and being perceived as particularly cosmopolitan and tolerant.
Moreover, Hamburg has secured second place in both the Smart City Index and the Talent City Index Germany. The city's strength lies in areas such as governance, IT and communications, energy and environment, mobility, and society and education for the Smart City Index, and its attractiveness for skilled professionals for the Talent City Index.
Hamburg's recognition as Germany's strongest urban brand, coupled with its tourism growth and leading positions in smart city and talent indices, underscores the city's appeal as a vibrant, innovative, and welcoming destination.
