What Caused the Delays?
Hamburger Straße reopening delayed again until late May
In coordination with the city's drainage authority, the administration has at least explained why the reopening of Hamburger Straße—originally slated for December 2025—has been pushed back. But one key question remains unanswered: when will the work finally be completed? regionalHeute.de reached out directly to the drainage authority for clarity.
The Reasons Behind the Setback
In a statement to the district council, officials cited "various unforeseen obstacles" that prevented the project from staying on schedule. Key issues included a construction halt during unexploded ordnance investigations, as well as two separate incidents requiring the recovery of the drilling head—once due to an obstruction and again after water damage. Beyond these technical challenges, this year's unusually severe frost period brought work in the underground utilities sector to a standstill for roughly eight weeks, adding further delays.
"Working at Full Speed"
So when can residents expect completion? Lennart Danckert, speaking on behalf of Stadtentwässerung Braunschweig GmbH, told regionalHeute.de: "Work is progressing at full speed. Based on the current timeline, we anticipate finishing the sewer construction by the end of May. At that point, the pedestrian and cycle path near the Shell gas station should also reopen."
Yet the disruptions won't end there—especially for drivers. The CDU had already inquired in an urgent motion about when the road surface repairs on Hamburger Straße (between Siegfriedstraße and Am Schwarzen Berge) would take place. The administration confirmed that resurfacing will follow the sewer upgrades in July and August, timed to coincide with the lighter traffic of the summer holidays.
Full Closure This Summer
The drainage authority provided regionalHeute.de with further details: "Once sewer work is complete, the City of Braunschweig will begin preparatory steps for the road repairs, including adjustments to the drainage channels. Until the summer break, the existing single-lane traffic arrangement toward the north will remain in place," Danckert explained.
During the summer holidays, however, Hamburger Straße between Siegfriedstraße and Schwarzer Berg will face a full closure in the northbound direction. Motorists will then be diverted onto a single lane on the western side of the street, with two-way traffic in effect.
The Third Question
For the sake of completeness: the CDU's third query asked whether the pedestrian and cyclist restrictions at the entire Siegfriedstraße junction could at least be lifted. The drainage authority, via the administration, clarified that the northern crossing at Hamburger Straße/Siegfriedstraße remains closed due to the ban on left turns (U-turns) at the Am Galggraben traffic light. Since U-turns are now being rerouted to the Hamburger Straße/Siegfriedstraße intersection, pedestrians and cyclists can no longer safely cross there alongside left-turning and U-turning vehicles from the north.
As work progresses, existing traffic safety measures will be scaled back and removed wherever possible.
