First Section of Berlinertordam Bridge Completed - Hamburg’s Berlinertordamm Bridge reopens first section ahead of 2027 completion
Hamburg’s largest inner-city bridge project is moving forward on time. The first section of the Berlinertordamm Bridge will open to vehicles this Thursday. The €80 million renewal scheme is set to finish by the end of 2027.
Work on the Berlinertordamm Bridge began in early 2024. The southern section is now complete, with pedestrians and cyclists already using it since mid-month. The structure spans railway tracks and the busy six-lane Bürgerweide road, linking the city center to eastern Hamburg.
Parts of the old overpass dated back over a century, with the oldest section built in 1902. Construction will now focus on the northern half, where traffic restrictions remain in place. Demolition of the old bridge will start in February 2026, requiring multiple full closures of Bürgerweide and the crossing.
The project remains on schedule, according to the Hamburg Streets, Bridges, and Waterways Office. No major delays have been reported so far.
The full reconstruction is expected to wrap up by late 2027. Once finished, the bridge will provide a modern link for all road users. The €80 million investment marks the city’s most extensive inner-city bridge renewal to date.
