Chamber of Commerce President: Reform Promises Not Fulfilled - Hamburg’s business leader warns Germany’s economic crisis demands urgent action
Norbert Aust, President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, has warned that Germany is facing a serious economic crisis. Speaking recently, he stressed the need for stronger ties between politicians and businesses to tackle the challenges ahead.
Aust pointed to recent trade talks with the USA, claiming they left Europe in a weaker position. He also argued that the €500 billion debt-funded special fund should focus only on investments, not broader spending.
The economic downturn is hitting Hamburg hard, with just one in five local small business ideas expecting better conditions soon. Aust singled out the port as a critical area where action is needed to regain lost ground against rivals. Despite the difficulties, he insisted Hamburg remains well placed to weather the storm. However, he criticized the federal government's current economic policies as falling short of what’s required.
Aust’s remarks highlight growing concerns over Germany's economic direction. With small businesses in Hamburg struggling, calls for targeted investment and closer cooperation between government and industry are likely to intensify. The port's future, in particular, will be a key focus for recovery efforts.
